Review: 8Bitdo NES30 Pro Game Controller

On my quest to find the perfect Bluetooth controller for "retro gaming" I stumbled upon this gem. The NES30 Pro Game controller from 8bitdo, covers all the bases for retro and even current generation gaming. The package includes the following items:

NES30 Pro Controller

Hard shell carrying case

USB cable for data & charging

Silver decorative key chain

When you initially un-box the NES30 controller you wouldn't be wrong to think that 8Bitdo took the classic NES controller, sanded off the corners, cut the cord then repackaged it. However a closer look reveals all types of refinements and upgrades that every gamer will appreciate. Where the original NES controller might feel cheaply made by today's standards the NES30 feels like a premium piece of hardware. The plastic has a nice texture to it that keeps it from slipping from your hands during long gaming sessions, and all of the buttons have the perfect amount of travel and "clickiness".

Speaking of buttons, 8Bitdo was sure to add enough for just about every console. There are 4 shoulder buttons, (more on those later) 4 face buttons, a traditional D pad, 2 analog sticks both of which can be depressed, and finally start and select. My only gripe with with shoulder button is the layout. They're labeled L1, L2, and R1 R2, but they're all placed in a single row, which makes L2 and R2 difficult to hit. Sure you can practice and learn their locations, but it's kind of a pain. Luckily this isn't much of an issue when you're dealing with consoles like the NES, SNES, Genesis, etc., but if you're thinking of using the NES30 Pro for modern consoles this could become a slight annoyance.

8Bitdo didn't leave out modern consoles as this controller is fully compatible with Windows, Android, iOS, Mac OS, and the Nintendo Switch! I use mine primarily with my RetroN 5, but I can verify that it works with all of the above after some tinkering with the firmware. The firmware can be upgraded or downgraded by visiting the manufacturer's website and downloading the appropriate software. It should be noted that I had the most difficult time trying to get this controller to work with my RetroN 5 because the instructions provided by 8Bitdo to downgrade/upgrade was flat out wrong! After hours of fiddling around I had to resort to Google to find the correct instructions, then voila! It worked perfectly.

Can I recommend this controller? Absolutley! Aside from the above issue with swapping the firmware the NES30 Pro has been a joy to use. I haven't had any dropouts with the Bluetooth connection, I've experienced zero lag, and the buttons have been remarkably responsive thus far. However I have to issue one word of caution. This controller is small. It's as small as the original SNES or NES controllers, so if you're used to the modern Xbox or Play Station sized controllers you may find your hands cramping after extended game sessions. My retro game sessions tend to come in 30 to 45 minute bursts, which seem perfect for this controller but your own comfort levels may vary.

The NES30 Pro controller can be purchased for $30.00 to $45.00 and is only available online.

Pros-

Fits nicely in your hands

Excellent build quality

Solid Bluetooth connection

Works with multiple systems

Cons-

Extended gaming sessions may cramp some hands due to it's size

Changing firmware could be smoother

L2 and R2 button placement could be a problem for some
